Incourage: The Cycle of Change for Healing Generations

‘Incourage’ provides the live-in therapeutic environment necessary for pēpi (babies) at risk of entering the care system to remain with their birth māmā (mothers).

Inside our live-in residence, mothers and babies are provided with a 24/7 wraparound service that works alongside other specialist services to support mothers to understand attachment, trauma, and overcome life-controlling issues, while still caring for her own baby.

Birth Mum’s Journey

“The Incourage programme saved my life, I would’ve been in jail, homeless or dead.  I knew I was ready for change I was over the chaos and mess that was my life and then Oranga Tamariki introduced me to Immerse, and mine and my baby’s life changed from there. I am here because of a great support network knowing I’m not alone and they didn’t expect me to be perfect, that was a relief. Within a year I have achieved so much with graduating from CADS, have my full license and car, started studying, made some lifelong friends but most of all I am a great mum to my baby meeting her needs and on a journey of healing and restoration with my other children. It takes a daily decision, taking one step at a time with amazing support around us to hold us up through the good and challenging times. Now I’m able to be part of the support network for the next birth mum and baby coming into the Incourage programme…and the next, and the next.” - HG

Foster Parents Journey

“Fostering through Incourage, we get to see the ‘fruit of our labour’ and the transformation.
The change is phenomenal and exciting to see and the ripple effect from that. Before we’d have the baby for a few months then they’d move on, and we’d get a report a few years later on how they’re doing. This way mum and baby are part of our family and we are introduced to people and things that we never would’ve taken the time to get to know, so this experience has opened our eyes and our hearts. At the outset we found we had to establish roles and how everyone fits within the new dynamics. Immerse supported us with how to manage and meet our own children’s needs as their buy-in is vital. We are preparing for our next Incourage mum and baby, to give mum time and a safe place to be the best version of herself that she can be. Mum and baby will join our family and our community as we open our hearts to theirs. Fostering through Incourage is being part of impacting and changing generations.” - MG
